As well as the Hyacinth Macaws and Jabiru on the stamps, several birds can be
identified in the margins. Clockwise from top left we have:
Anhinga, Anhinga anhinga;
Cocoi Heron, Ardea cocoi (I think this is right):
Jabiru, Jabiru mycteria;
Purple Gallinule, Porphyrio martinica;
Jabiru again
Common Moorhen, Gallinula chloropus.
The dreadful coloration on this sheet makes positive identifications very difficult. My best efforts are:
Top left - Pearl-spotted Owlet, Glaucidium perlatum
Top right - Pel’s Fishing-Owl, Scotopelia peli
Lower right - No idea. Any suggestions please?
The background owl is unidentified too.
The birds in the top left and top right corners seem to be Great Egret, Ardea alba. The bird in the top centre label is Little Grebe, Tachybaptus ruficollis; the nest with eggs at centre bottom could well belong to it.
As well as Madagascar Long-eared Owl on the stamp we have the following in the surrounds:
| Top left - | Barking Owl, Ninox connivens; |
| Left of lower pair - | African Wood-Owl, Strix woodfordii |
| Right of lower pair | Southern Boobok, Ninox novaeseelandiae |
The stamp is inscribed Trichoglossus rubritorquis, which is the North Australian sub-species of Rainbow Lorikeet, T.haematadus. It is known as Red-collared Lorikeet because of the complete red band round its neck.
In the surrounds, the bird in the top left, the flying bird and the right-hand bird of the lower right pair are all Rainbow Lorikeet, Trichoglossus haematodus.
The left-hand bird of the lower right pair is Chattering Lory, Lorius garrulus.
Keel-billed Toucan, Ramphastos sulfuratus, appears as the left-hand bird in the lower surrounds as well as on the stamp. Also in the surrounds are:
Toco Toucan, Ramphastos toco at top left;
Collared Aracari, Pteroglossus torquatus as the right-hand bird in the lower surrounds.
As well as the Kagu on stamp we have a New Caledonia Parakeet, Cyanoramphus saisetti, flying in the top surrounds. This species was formerly regarded as a sub-species of Red-fronted Parakeet, C.novaezelansiae, but is now recognised as a species in its own right.
The stamp bears Verreaux’s Eagle-Owl, Bubo lacteus. The owl with chicks in the surrounds appears to be Great Gray Owl, Strix nebulosa, though the colouring is more brown than grey.
The stamp shows Verreaux’s Eagle, Aquila verreauxii. In the surrounds. The bird alighting on the nest is Osprey, Pandion haliaetus.
The bird on the stamp is Turquoise-browed Motmot, Eunomota superciliosa, a species from Central America.
Clockwise from top right we have four male birds in breeding plumage:
Eurasian Dotterel, Charadrius morinellus
European Golden Plover, Pluvialis apricaria
Black-bellied (Grey) Plover, Pluvialis squatarola
Northern Lapwing, Vanellus vanellus
The sketchier birds in the surrounds could be the females of the species.
The bird in the centre strip is clearly a Toucan, probably Channel-billed Toucan, Ramphastos vitellinus, though the facial colouring is wrong.
This miniature sheet from the same set as the above sheet has an unidentified Trogon on the 7000d stamp. In the surrounds we have three pairs of birds:
| Left: | Himalayan Monal, Lophophorus impejanus |
| Centre: | Comb-crested Jacana, Irediparra gallinacea |
| Right: | Unidentified - Any help please? |
The next MS shows Guianan Red Cotinga on the stamp and the following birds in the surrounds:
| Left: | Salmon-crested Cockatoo, Cacatua moluccensis |
| Centre: | Eastern Rosella, Platycercus eximius |
| Right: | Sao Tomé Sunbird, Dreptes thomensis |
| 7000d | Burnished-buff Tanager, Tangara cayana, |
| 9000d | Venezuelan Troupial, Icterus icterus, |
| 10000d | Crested Oropendola, Psarocolius decumanus, |
| 14000d | Orange-cheeked Parrot, Pyrilia barrabandi. |
The stamp shows Orange-cheeked Parrot, Pyrilia barrabandi.
In the surrounds we have a pair of Lesser Florican, Sypheotides indicus, and a pair of woodpeckers, which may be intended as Crimson-mantled Woodpecker, Colaptes rivolii.
On the stamp there is Red-crested Cardinal, Paroaria coronata.
In the surrounds we have at left a (possible) Hepatic Tanager, Piranga flava. At right there is an Eclectus Parrot, Eclectus roratus.
On the stamp there is a Diamond Tanager, Stephanophorus diadematus.
The centre bird is a Royal-Flycatcher. I prefer Amazonian Royal-Flycatcher, Onychorhynchus coronatus to Northern Royal-Flycatcher, O.mexicanus. The former has a cinnamon-rufous tail while the latter is cinnamon-buff. All the colours on the sheet are too garish so this distinction is unreliable.
To the left in the surrounds there is a Tufted Jay, Cyanocorax dickeyi.
The 10k stamp has:
Ring Ouzel, Turdus torquatus, and
Eurasian Capercaillie, Tetrao urogallus.
The 18k stamp has:
Black Grouse, Tetrao tetrix.
The 20k stamp has:
Eurasian Three-toed Woodpecker, Picoides tridactylis.
In the label at the top right-hand corner is a flying Golden Eagle, Aquila chrysaetos.
